Missing vessel Boy John on passage from
Aberdeen with no Navigational equipment reported to
Aberdeen C/G by mobile phone(which was later traced
to Pentland Firth area)that he was lost and thought
he was about the Dornoch Firth area but was actually
broken down in the Pentland Firth.Thurso and
Longhope Lifeboats were launched to search the area
at 0020hrs in rough sea conditions with a SW 7-8
wind.We were tasked to search along the mainland
shore from Dunnet Hd thro the inner channel at
Stroma to Duncansby Hd looking for two small red and
green lights in a black dark winters night.Later we
were joined by Rescue 137 the RAF Lossiemouth
helicopter and many Coastguard teams on the mainland
and Orkney side. We had just arrived at the
southeast corner of Stroma when the St Margarets
Hope c/g team reported that they thought they could
see small lights on a bearing from South Ronaldsay
to Stroma light. The chopper was deployed to
investigate and confirmed it was the casualty who
was drifting dangerously near the rocks on
Swona. Both Lifeboats were deployed post haste.
Meantime the Helicopter winchman was lowered to the
deck of the casualty because the 1 person on board
seemed to be unable to help himself and a line had
to be attached. Longhope arrived on scene with
seconds to spare and had to tow the Boy John (with
winchman still aboard )off the shear cliff face by
the stern.Once clear of the rocks the tow was
swapped to the bow of the casualty by the winchman
who was then lifted back to the chopper. It was
decided then to tow the stricken boat back to
Longhope as the weather had now deteriorated to very
rough. Thurso escorted the tow into Scapa Flow and
then turned for a very bouncy run home crossing the
firth and arriving home at 0500hrs.
