7 Silver 3 Bronze The last medal was for service to the
Multitanker ASCANIA 19th March 1999.
Foreign Awards
The German Government awarded iron plaques and diplomas
to Coxswain, Second Coxswain and bowman, and
certificates of appreciation to the crew for services to
the S.S "Aaso "of Hamburg on the 16th March 1928.
RNLI AWARDS FOR GALLANTRY
GOLD MEDAL
- For a rescue, which has been effected, as the result
of an act in which outstanding courage, skill and
initiative has been shown.
It may also be awarded, when life has not been saved, if
together exceptional courage has been shown.
SILVER MEDAL
- For an act of outstanding gallantry and skill, which
just falls short of the standard required for the Gold
Medal.
BRONZE MEDAL
- For an act of conspicuous
gallantry and/or merit which falls short of the standard
required for the Silver Medal.
Each person who is awarded one of the above medals, also
receive a vellum, signed by the President, Chairman and
Director, which briefly describes the circumstance of
the case.
A vellum, or more properly, "The Thanks of the
Institution Inscribed on Vellum" is also an award in its
own right, and may be awarded for meritorious act which
fall short of the standard required for the Bronze
medal.
A medal Service Certificate, or a Vellum Service
Certificate is presented to other members of the
lifeboat crew, when a medal or Vellum has been awarded
to the Coxswain or other crew member. These certificates
are not awards. They are proof of participation only.
Letters of appreciation may also be given. These are not
awards. They fall below velum standards.
In descending order these are :-
Framed Chairman's Letter of Appreciation.
Letter of thanks from the Director.
Letter of thanks from Chief of Operations.
SHOREBOATS
The RNLI also recognises that boats which are less
seaworthy than RNLI lifeboats, do carry out rescues or
attempted rescues. Any of the above awards may be made
to personnel in these craft.
